Our People
Renee M. Virlee, CPA graduated with a B.S. degree in accounting from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Accountancy from the University of Iowa. She joined the predecessor firm, Pearson & Associates, in 2016 and took over as owner of Pearson & Virlee, PC in 2021. She has more than 15 years of experience in public accounting. Renee specializes in corporate, partnership, and personal tax return preparation and planning, financial statement preparation, bookkeeping, and small business consulting.
Renee enjoys spending time with family and friends, backpacking, international travel, and gardening. Renee and her husband operate a small family farm and have three children.
Jon Schubert graduated from Upper Iowa University with a B.A. degree in Accounting. He joined the firm in November of 2023. Jon has 30 years of experience in various aspects of public accounting. Jon specializes in accounting, advisory, and taxation for individuals, corporations, partnerships, trusts/estates, gifts, and not-for-profits. In addition, he has expertise in governmental and not-for-profit accounting, reporting, and compliance.
When he is not at work assisting clients, Jon enjoys spending time with family and friends. His interests include biking, golfing, breweries, community festivals & concerts. Jon is a member of the Elks and a fan of the Hawkeyes and the Kernels.
Megan Shook graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. degree in Public Accounting and holds a certificate in Project Management from Kirkwood Community College. She joined Pearson & Virlee, PC in November of 2024. Megan has worked 6 tax seasons and has 4 years of full-time experience in public accounting. She assists in business and individual tax return preparation, financial statement preparation and bookkeeping.
Megan enjoys spending time with her fiancé, family, friends, and dog. Outside of work, she pursues interests such as hiking, crocheting, gardening, and attending Hawkeye sporting events, particularly supporting the women’s basketball team.
Lynn Butterbrodt graduated from Cornell College with a BSS degree in Economics & Business and Psychology. She joined the firm in 2022, bringing experience ranging from business, to management, to human services. Lynn assists with payroll preparation, payroll tax reporting, bookkeeping services, and individual tax return preparation.
Lynn enjoys reading, cooking, painting, bike rides, and walks. Lynn has three children, their spouses, and two grandsons she loves spending time with. Her favorite title is Mimi!
Amy Blackwell joined the firm in 2005 and is the Office Manager. In addition to managing the office, Amy is responsible for payroll preparation and tax reporting, bookkeeping services, and QuickBooks assistance. She also supports our firm with administrative functions and provides excellent service to our clients.
Amy enjoys spending time with her son and extended family and friends. She enjoys reading, movies, and traveling.
Kim Heeren graduated from the University of Iowa with a BAS degree in Business Administration with an Entrepreneurship certificate. She joined the firm in 2023, bringing experience ranging from office administration to business practices. Kim assists with payroll preparation, payroll tax reporting, bookkeeping services, and administrative functions.
Kim lives outside of Mount Vernon and enjoys being active in her grandchildren’s activities, traveling with her husband, being outside and going on new adventures. She is very active with several non-profits that assist disabled veterans in the state of Iowa.
Tracy Pearson, CPA founder and owner of Pearson & Associates, PC from 2005-2020; retired from Pearson & Virlee, PC in 2023.
Our History
In 2021 Renee Virlee created Pearson & Virlee, PC, taking over ownership from the preceding company Pearson & Associates, PC (formed by Tracy Pearson in 2005). From the start until today we have focused on the client and a quality product. You won't spend time training a different accountant about your circumstances or business climate at each appointment and phone call since we know you. We have locations in Cedar Rapids as well as Mount Vernon for your convenience.
Our Credentials
Our firm participates in the Peer Review program prescribed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants. Our firm was last reviewed in September 2021. The resulting report stated that all of our accounting practices and procedures complied with or exceeded the standards of the industry.
